A Cozy Winter Home After the Holidays

We all know that feeling that creeps in as soon as the holiday decor comes down. The tree and ornaments are packed away, no more twinkling lights, the music has switched back over, and the Christmas cheer has come and gone. Some people dread this feeling, while others thrive in the simplicity of a less cluttered home.

It doesn’t really matter which way you lean, I think we all can agree that deep down (or shouting from the rooftops!) we still want that lived-in, cozy, warm and inviting feeling that Christmas brings. I’m here to tell you that it’s possible. It may not be as simple as pulling out your box labeled “Christmas decor”, but I know it can be done with a little thought and guidance from the tips below. The first few have some winter-specific examples, but can be adjusted and considered year round.

  1.  TEXTILES. A textile is basically anything made of fabric – so pillows, blankets, upholstery, curtains and rugs. Winter materials like flannel, boucle, wool, corduroy, knits and velvets are a nice nod to the season and of course very cozy. You could even take it a step further and consider the pattern of the textile as well – like plaids and fair isles.
  2. GREENERY. Just because the Christmas tree comes down, doesn’t mean the other winter greens have to. I love keeping out my cozy winter stems and greenery for a couple of months. It helps fill the white space and that bare, empty feeling that happens when you take everything down.
  3. SCENT. Whether it’s lighting a candle or diffusing oils. Scent plays a strong role in how a space feels. It’s an unseen must-have.
  4. LIGHTING. Y’all. Overhead lighting is a buzz kill. I SAID IT. Unless you are looking for that earring back that you accidentally dropped in the carpet, say no to overhead and YES to lamps. Trust meeeee on this one.
  5. FEELING. This is the last piece of the equation that only you can decide. It’s whatever settles your mind and welcomes in the feelings of comfort and peace. For me? It’s a house tucked in for the night where everything is back in its place, and I can finally settle in on the couch with a blanket for the evening. For others? It may be a warm bath with a glass of wine, or maybe a home cooked meal with a good playlist. What is your cozy feeling?

I took it to instagram last week and asked YOU what you consider cozy in your home. Loved reading through all of the responses! Here are a few top ones.

I’ve pulled together some favorites below to help achieve cozy in your home. As always, shop what you already have and fill in the gaps with one or two of these pieces. Stay cozy out there!
